  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Right then...

Just had my two spayed... Bandit was done first on friday and seems fine... Smokey was done second and today... They went back outside after their spay and i put in some vet bed for them to lie on and kept food etc as normal...

They seem fine but is there anything else or was there anything else i could do/have done?
Should i have kept them in the house after the spay for a night and restricted their movements taken away the hay until the stiches have healed etc? Is there anything i could do to make sure they heal ok?

Is there anything i should watch out for?????

It is generally recommended that a Bun is kept indoors the night after a GA.

A soft clean dry bedding such as Vetbed is fine. They will both still need hay to eat 24/7. The hay can be stuffed into cardboard tubes ( eg empty loo roll tubes ) to avoid too much hay lying around, although the spay wound should be small and well closed by internal sutures.

I tend to confine my Does for 7 days after a spay but many people feel that 2 days is enough. I prefer to err on the side of caution though

As far as wound healing is concerned it should remain clean and dry and the surrounding skin, although a bit pink, should not look angry and red. There should not be any lumps appearing around the wound. The fur that was shaved away will grow back but sometimes this takes several months. This is nothing to worry about.

Throughout recovery the Doe should continue to eat poo and wee as normal with no signs of reduced GI motility ( small poo/anorexia ) or straining to urinate ( indicating a possible cystitis )

:)

Sounds asthough all is going well, just check the stitches a couple of times a day :D Loads of healing vibes :)

Thanks for that Jane... THey actually have not gone "outside" but they are in their wendyhouse... (i used the day of the spay to modify it so they ahve a second floor now!) I will keep them in for another day because Bandit has served her time now i think!

The vet bed has been duly dug up and thrown around today so obviously feeling better...

Bandit had her hernia removed as well so i am being extra careful with her although only one incision it is another op so fingers crossed on that score!

it is important that for 24hours they are kept warm so often indoors is best. (mine got cold ears around 2am which normally would be all snuggly so i had to wrap in a blanket. re bedding shredded paper or vet bed is good. hay in rack only not on floor unless you have somewhere else where they cant lie in it! and they mustnt jump up ramps or levels for about 3-5days minimum.

I did think about the ramp so it is out of the shed until the time is ready... SOrry should have put that down...

I left them in the vets till the end of the evening so they could recover in there because i have no where in the house for them (wish i had a dog crate!)...

We have had humid nights lately (perks of being bog dwellers!) which i suppose has helped...:D
