  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Best age for castration?

I haven't got mine done yet.

All depends on the vet, some prefer to do this earlier rather than later (around 14 weeks) and some say around 6 months.

Either way make sure the vet is rabbit-savvy and knows their stuff :)

I agree with Anna completely but i wouldn't get an old rabbit done as it may decrease their chance of getting through, but i may be completely wrong

Paddy has started humping things (literally this evening!) but last time we went to the vets she said he'd be ready in Autumn. He's just coming up to 5 months now. I'd rather get him done as soon as possible so I can get him a playmate. I might give the vets a ring tomorrow to double check.

They can be done as soon as their testicles drop but most vets wait until 4 months. 5 months is fine, though if your vets not comfortable I wouldn't force them, find a more experienced vet!

I took Charlie up to the vets every two weeks from 14 weeks on wards to see if he had 'dropped' his bits. Think he was about 18/20 weeks by the time him and his brother had all their bits. His poor brother had about 5 veternary people prodding his bits to see if he had any before they decided he was just good at hiding them!!

Thanks for the advice. The humping is getting out of control & he's starting to smell. Not a dirty smell just animaly if that makes sense? So I'm booking him in next week.
