  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Trooper & Lillie - Ear problem (updated 29/07/08)

Pepsi's People

Alpha Buck
Both buns have been shaking their heads from side to side recently so they were taken to the vets tonight.
Lillie has gunk in one ear & Trooper in both. They have been given Canaural drops (1-2 drops in both ears twice daily). I've given them the first dose tonight, I held them for an age to let the drops go down but they both shook their heads like mad when let go. The vet said she couldn't see their eardrums because of the gunk so I'm hoping neither are perforated.
She didn't say when to go back again or how long to treat for :?
The instructions with the drops say 21 days if its mites but also that a review is needed if treatment is longer than 7 days.

Has any one else used these drops and for how long? I'm thinking of booking them in again next Monday.

If the vet cant see their ear drums they may be perferated in which case it is very dangerous to use canaural ear drops.can you try a different vet or go back to the one your using and ask for the bunnies to have an ear flush under GA and have a culture taken to see which bacteria you are dealing with as they may need antibiotics.STOP using the ear drops until your sure they dont have perferated ear drums.Pleas contact Jacks jane on here for more advice

I will give the vets a ring today & ask for more information. Both rabbits are fine this morning although Trooper's mane is very bedraggled from constant licking. Not sure who is the culprit:?
According to the leaflet the drops have 2 anti-biotics, an anti-fungal & an anti-inflammatory as actve ingredients so not sure why another ABX would be necessary :?

Took them both back tonight for a review. There's a slight improvement (one of Troopers eardrums is now visible).
I've now got to start a course of diluted baytril instead (as eardrops).

They will not be happy
