Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Icky Sticky Eye!

Hija...
About a week or 2 after coming into care Elliot got an icky sticky eye... I rinsed it with water and booked him in to the vets the next day. Vet checked him over very very thoroughly (I was pretty impressed) and gave me some eye cream (which didn't make any difference,) and said he couldn't find anything physically wrong with him, to cause a yucky eye, and then we chatted about his bedding and such stuff, He seemed to think he was having a reaction to something, or it could be hay fever, so I have been on a humm I guess 3 week trial now, to try and discover what's causing his eye to be sticky, I have tried one by one removing all the different bedding's I use, ie. just hay, then just straw, (etc) and even went so far as to just giving him a load of shredded paper (which he really wasn't impressed with) however it's all been to no avail, because his eye is still icky, I'm a bit upset because his eye was fine when he first came to me, so It's got to be something round about thats causing it, we're heading back the vets on Monday with the results of all this bedding testing, but if anyone has any ideas of what he could be reacting to? Or any other solutions to try... coz I am all out!!

What I mean by icky sticky, a clear fluid constantly weeping out of his eye, drying in the fur round his eye, sometimes it will dry up but never long enough for his fur to recover, When it's at it's worst his third eyelid will start to close up over his eye.

Oh and there is no pattern as to when it's worse or not.. like I've been recording to see if it's worse on hot high pollen count days, or when it's raining, or if it has a cycle of good bad good bad over a time period, but no I haven't found any clue grrrrr!

Poor baby!

I would say he probably has a blocked nasolacrimal duct meaning his tears dont drain as they should and a sticky discharge builds up. This often becomes infected. Elongated tooth roots are often the cause of a blocked nasolacrimal duct. An Xray of the skull is the only way to confirm a diagnosis of tooth root elongation effecting the upper teeth. Elongated tooth roots effecting the lower teeth can often be felt as a lumpy jawline.

I would suggest mentioning tooth root elongation to the Vet as if it were an allergy I would expect both eyes to be effected and from what you have said that is not the case :?
