  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

New bunnies - 12 days old - advice please

VALM

Young Bun
Hello. Millie's bunnies are now 12 days old - there are four in total and all of them are thriving. Only one of them looks like dad and it is our intention to take them to the vet in a couple of weeks to have them sexed. Can you plesae tell me when they will be safe for us to handle and also when approximately they will leave the nest. I intend to clean the rest of the hutch out this weekend but leave the nest intact for the time being.

Many thanks in eagerness of your replies. Valx

okay I can tell you what I did, (but please don't take it as law or anything... it's just what worked best for me and our babies) as two of our rescue bunnies recently had babies, from 7 days old I started stroking them every day... while mommy was watching.... then after their eyes started to open (12-14 days) I picked them up by the hutch for a quick cuddle 2/3 times a day, after 3 weeks they were moving around, and not sleeping so much in the nest mum had made, so I finally cleared it out, and started giving them proper cuddles, the youngest this sunday will be 4 weeks, and the other litter will be 6, the six week olds are eating normal food now, they all go out on the grass for a run (i started to slowly introduce this from 3 weeks onwards first for just 15 min, then a bit longer, and a bit longer etc) , I've started to bring the 4 weekers into the house for cuddles, and the kids give them a stroke now, my 6 week babies, are very independant, Fidget loves mommy and tends to follow her everywhere, but sooty does his/her own thing... they are off to the vets on 28th (7 weeks) to be sexed and such stuff... at around 8-10 weeks, (i think) we will start to separate them from mum... as mummy has found a new home! Yay!! Hope that helps a bit, but all babies, and bunnies are different!!

Here is a pic of the youngest 3 (i know loads of you have seen them already but i cant help it) they are 18 days old here..
