Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

vhd in my area

I found out today that someone I know and spend a lot of time with has just lost their outdoor rabbit and it sounds like it died of VHD. I have an indoor rabbit of my own and have had her vaccinated against both mixi and VHD, but I am petrified that I might be carrying the virus and may give it to my own rabbit. Is their anything I can do to minimise this risk or will me rabbit be OK as she has been vaccinated? Please help

If your bunny is vaccinated then you should be absolutely fine.

VHD is spread by oral, nasal and parenteral transmission and is found in urine and faeces in infected rabbits. It can also be spread by insects that reach the blood supply. It can last outside the body for 3-4 days.

Whilst I understand that the vaccine will be sufficient, I would just ensure that you wash your hands etc with a good disinfectant/anti bacterial and make sure that if you have 'met' the poor rabbit that died recently, that you wash your clothes thoroughly. I'd also make sure that you can't have carried anything on your feet from your friends house to yours.

I am sure all will be fine.:D

Thanks a lot for the reply, fortunately I never had any contact with the rabbit that has died, and I have since washed my clothes and things, my own rabbit only had her jabs last month anyway so fingers crossed she should be well protected. I live in hemel hempstead in hertfordshire. Thank you again.
