  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

worried about thumper

kerrib1985

Young Bun
well thumper coat has been in very good condital the last couple of weeks iv been brushing him everyday which help make it go all soft for a couple of hours but then it back to looking really dry and messes.
his 3 years old and has never had any prombles with his coat before and iv never had to brush it before either.
he is still eating not like he used to. he used to eat all his food within an hour, now there is still food in his bowl at the end of the day, still drinking, and now he is very cuddley not that i mind that but he was never like that, wouldnt either sit on my lap for a min but last night he sat on my lap for 30 min.
could just be me worrying but i love him so much. thinking i will take him to the vet just to get him checked over

I'm guessing Thumper's a rabbit? :) If his guts are slowing down (indicated by loss of appetite) and his hair's a mess, he's probably eating too much hair for his stomach to cope with - try getting some bromelain tablets from holland and barrett, the 40mg chewable ones - one a day for him, and make him drink more by putting a splash of boiling water in his cold water, and serve it in a dish, right in front of his nose. Give him a handful of fresh hay several times a day, and shut him in with it so he'll eat it just from boredom - he only needs a few teaspoons of dry food every day and should be eating lots and lots of hay, as this is the only way the hair will pass through his guts properly. Hope he will be OK soon - my rabbits look like moths have been eating them at the mo

i cleaned out his hutch the other day it was as bad as normal is so i dont think his going as much as he used to i didnt notice any change in the colour but his needs cleaning out again today so i will have a look and let you know

well iv just finishing cleaning out thumper and his hutch was hardly wet at all and he hasnt touched his food that i put in there a couple of hours ago. i got him to eat some tho.

I would have him seen by a vet asap.

If he has a dull look about his appearance and his appetite has changed it sounds more to me like he could be experiencing oral discomfort as opposed to a case of moulting.

It could be anything, kidney if the urine is a much lighter color than the normal greasy yellow color.

It could be the teeth, lick too much fur, etc. so we need more info. At this point, it is well worth the money to go see a rabbit savvy vet. If you haven't seen a vet before, make sure to call first, ask if that vet is an expert on rabbits, an exotic pet specialist
