  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Yesterday we had to take my rabbit to the vet urgently becuase his penis was swollen! The vet first diagnosed it as paraphimosis but later phoned us to tell us that it was infact a penis prolapse which is even more serious. He said that it's very rare and this is the first case he's seen of it! Today the operation to get it cleaned up and put into place apparently went well and the swelling has gone down. He said if the swelling did not go down then the penis would have to be removed!!! we won't be able to pick him up until tomorrow. He said the cause could have been over groomng in that area? He has recently been shedding like crazy so maybe this has something to do with it? I can't wait to see how my poor little fella's doing, wish him luck on his recovery everyone, I hope he'll be ok.

He's back from the vets, he needs pain killers and antibiotics daily and needs to be isolated until he's healed properly. He also has to look like a clown for a while to prevent him from nibbling at his stitches, doesn't look to happy about it!
