  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

There is no definative information. Even Exotic Specialist Vets have differeing views !!

I have been advised by one Exotics Vet to treat a symptomatic Rabbit for 6weeks and an asymptoaic one for 9 days. There is absolutely no funding available for more research at the moment and if the Proffesionals cant agree on a protocol what chance have we got !!

So for me it will remain a 9 day precautionary treatment and a 6 week treatment in a symptomatic Rabbit. Usually the Protozoa has already been passed out of the body once symptoms occur. Treatment is to try to reduce the amount of spores remaining. It is the spores that cause problems as they migrate to various parts of the body ie the CNS, the Kidneys and the Lenses of the eyes. Currently it is not thought that all spores will be removed with Fenbendazole, but the numbers will be reduced and hopefully the Buns own immune system wil keep things under control. But then again an article in The Veterinary Record in 2001 apparently stated that Fenbendazole does clear all the spores.......

Gosh!, no wonder somw of us are confused about the length of treatment, I have been giving a 28 day course for all my bunnies whether showing signs or not so by what you are saying it should be either 9 days for no signs and 42 days for bunnies showing signs?

It would appear that 28 days is no better than 9 days then if it doesn't do the trick

I think what confuses me is why 9 days, 28 days or 42 days when most bunnies carry EC but just don't show it, surely it takes the same amount of time to expel from the body whether there are signs or not?
