  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Metacam

Hi!

It's a painkiller and anti-inflammatory that is sometimes given to rabbits with things like chronic joint/dental pain. It comes in a liquid and is not actually licensed for rabbits although it is safe for them (so you would have to sing a disclaimer when it is prescribed).

It is a very safe a effective drug but it can cause stomach ulcers (I think) if it is used longterm.

make sure it's only given once a day

The dosage should be:

Weight of bun (in KG) x 0.1 / 1.5

So if your bun is tiny and weighs 2 KG, then the dosage is around 0.13 cc (ml)

assuming your vet sells you the 1.5 mg version

Not sure what I was thinking, you only have to sign a disclaimer, you won't have to sing, don't worry:lol:!

Dosages depend on which metacam you are given...

The dog metacam doseage for rabbits is worked out as...

Weight of bun (in KG) x 0.5 / 1.5 but that is the MAXIMUM dosage they can have in a day. I would always consult with a vet prior to giving a particular doseage.

0.5 is very high. The "few days cramping" dosage is 0.2, so it's wt. x 0.2/1.5

but I have read in that other thread among some of us that Metacam dosage discussed in the Nov 2007 vet conference can be higher than the 0.2
