Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Arthritus-glucosamine advice

bunny mad lisa

Mama Doe
hi all
i have a bunny with suspected arthritus. She is 7 and over the past 6 months she has slowed down. Recently she has started lying down much of th time and even whn i let her out inthe garden. She is on metacam but i have been only giving her that when she sems to be hving a bad day but am going to talk to my vet about giving her it permantly. I am just a bit worried about long term side effects. She is currently on 0.3ml and she weighs 2.2kg.
i have heard alot about glucosamine as a supplement and want to give it a try.
I read in my book that you can give cosequin which is a product for cats and dogs, anyone tried it? or i was going to get some glucosime capsules from a health food shop to sprinkle on her food. any advice on products or dose rates would be much appreciated!
thanks lisa

Hi there, I spoke to the makers of Cosequin/Synoquin a while back as I was considering this for my older girls, and they said that whilst they hadn't done any clinical trials on rabbits they had received positive feedback from people who had used it.

I would say you may find it much cheaper to find a Glucosamine supplement online/from a health shop than getting the above from your vet though, and should have the same effect.
