  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

New Kit
Our rabbit Tinkerbell (we let our daughter name her) had babies ten days ago.Does anybody know when we can take her out and make a fuss of her?Shes been stuck in her hutch for ages now.Babies are still alive we can hear them moving any idea when we can have a look?

You can let the mother out no problem. In the wild rabbits rarely see to their kits more than a couple of times a day anyway.
You can look at the babies too, that's fine. Most breeders actually recommend you check on the babies from they are newborn to ensure none of them has died, dead kits in the nest could spell trouble for the other babies, and cause them to get cold.

When my rabbit had babies I let her out as normal ever since the day the kits were born. She would have a run at the floor while I checked on her babies, and was quite often away for over an hour. When the babies were 2-3 weeks old they started joining their mother out on the floor.
Aroma hated being stuck in the hutch, it made her grumpy and hard to handle (she's normally the sweetest ever!) her usual cuddly personality came through when she had been out for a while.
