  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

how do i know if my rabbit has been spayed?

i took my rabbit to the vets for her first jabs and general check up, i would like a male companion for her and needed to know if she had been spayed but the vet is unable to tell me as she is very hairy and he said the scar would be quite tiny. He suggested booking her in to be spayed but i wondered if there would be any other way of knowing other than putting her through surgery she may not need? she does mark her territory, get's grumpy and used to mount her neutered male companion alot! - does this sound like the behaviour of rabbit that has not been spayed?:?

Yup, it certainly does - especially the marking territory and getting grumpy parts. Something else you might see much more commonly in unspayed buns is 'nesting' behaviour - pulling out fur and making a nest.

As a general rule I'd say that unless you have explicitly been told that a bun is spayed, they are probably not.

yes she is a rescue rabbit - we were told they were bonded boy bunnies! initially she was very scared and used to hide behind her companion and make growling noises but over the past few weeks she has become quite affectionate and we are now able to handle her (they had never been handled much and were about 2 yrs old when we got them) We thought maybe an x-ray would show if she'd had anything removed or not??

Very often a rescue would know if the bun was spayed or not and usually they do it before adoption so it might be worth asking them ....don't know if xray shows it up but ultrasound certainly would.

Her behaviour does seem to point to her still having hormones though, therefore being unspayed.
