  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Savlon or not

Hi,
Can you put Savlon on a rabbit’s skin were another rabbit has bitten her?

Thanks

How deep is the bite? Is it a puncture wound or a tear ?

The best thing to do in the first instance is to clean the wound with a saline solution. If its a deep puncture wound then you need to consult your Vet as antibiotcs may be needed.

Savlon Liquid is not suitable to use. Savlon cream could be used sparingly but only on a very superficial scratch

Hi,
This happened the other night, and when I found it in the morning it was not bleeding. At the time I washed it with boiled salt water and it has now got a slight scab on it. But it is looking dry, so I thought if I put some Savlon antiseptic cream on, it might help with the healing.

Also there is quite a bit of fur missing around this area, will this eventually grow back.
Thanks:(:(

As long as the skin around the scab is not red and inflammed and the initial wound was superficial I'd just leave it alone. The lost fur will grow back.

However if the wound was deep ( puncture wound ) then the fact its scabbed over may not necessarily be a good sign. Bite wounds ( deep ones ) often heal on the surface ( a scab ) but underneath there is a lot of infected tissue. This will result in the formation of an abscess. Rabbit abscesses are not good news.
If in any doubt I'd ask your Vet to take a look at the wound
