Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Pasturella/Teeth - ADVICE NEEDED PLEASE

Hi everyone,

My female rabbit has got an upper respitory infection and it's been really bad for a while. They gave her baytril and that worked for a while but then it came back, then they said she needed her teeth done and her tear ducts flushed as they were blocked. She went in for the operation but they said she was too bad to go under the anaesthetic so sent her home with some new medicine (that kids banana stuff). It seems to have improved a little, not much really, but her right eye is really gunked up and red to the extent that she can't open it :( She's got some drops but they don't do much really.

I don't know what to do. She needs the op to help her eye but she might die because she's still ill under the anaesthetic :( but her eye is really really bad even through I clean it as much as i can.

Does anyone have any advice. Please help.

Just to add, she's eating and drinking as normal but has a gooey nose and her breathing sometimes sounds like she's got a really bad cold :(

Ours boy had this but he didn't have the any real problems with the eyes but one did get wet from time to time, he had his front teeth removed in the end and touch wood it hasn't come back, this was 4 years ago now, mind you with the luck in my life at the mo things will change i expect.

You could bathe her eye with cooled boiled water on cotton wool, then put a slick of vaseline around her eye to stop the tears from irritating her skin.

If she's got worse since the vet saw her, it might be worth telephoning them and asking for antibiotic eye drops (tiacil drops or fucithalmic ointment)

My mums rabbit had a similar problem a few years ago his eye was a bit gunky but he was very dribbly, he has his teeth removed and has been much better since that of course would require anasethetic (sp?). Might be worth asking your vet if theres anyway of making her well enough short term to cope with the op good luck
