How much food to feed?

xShellx

Alpha Buck
Just wondered how much pellets I should be giving.

My Buns are Marble a 1 year old Giant Papillion cross who weighs 3kg and Pepper a Pure Flemish whos nearly 5 months old and weighs 4kgs (2 weeks ago!)

I give themn a bowl of pellets each evening and they always seam starving by the time I feed them. Marble will chase Pepper away at feeding time. They have greens 3-4 times a week and unlimited hay which they dont seam to go mad on.

Should I give them more? IS there like a guide on the amount?

Buns are greedy. Pellets are like the equivilent of sweets to kids and they will go mad on them if you let them. If you up it they wont eat as much hay as they need too. If they were really starving they'd eat the hay.

I agree with Amy.
I have spoken with a rabbit specialist who advised me to feed my buns unlimited hay (you may need to offer them a few different ones as they will have preferance). The only one to avoid ging unlimited amounts of is Alfaalfa hay as its very high in calcium. As well as unlimited hay, your ADULT rabbit should be having only 2 tablespoons of pelleted feed daily and two small handfuls of veg daily.
For your younger rabbit, you need to slowly introduce one new veg at a time. You do not state specifically how much the younger bunny gets so i assume he gets veg a few times a week. I would also build him up to two small handfuls of veg daily, when he is an adult, you will want to increase it to 3 small handfuls as I imagine he's gonna be quite a size! At the moment he can have maybe 5-6 tablespoons of pelleted feed daily, once he is fully grown, thi will need revising depending on the weight he reaches. A guide is one tablespoon per 1Kg bodyweight. He is allowed more now because he is growing and needs the calories.

remember that these changes need to be made very gradually. You cannot make the changes too slowly but you could do it too fast, so if in doubt, slow down! i would suggest adjusting the pellet ration over the course of one week or so and at the same time, increase the amount of hay you offer (ensure that you offer at least two new lots daily). Once this is changed, set about adjusting the veg.

hi..we have french lops and we have been told by the vet that 2 handfuls of mix is enough for them as the rest of their diet should be veg ,hay etc.
i know if we let them pick how much they wanted they would eat the whole bag:lol:

Dont give them to much pellets as they arent as good for them as hay.
A bowl full a day is what i recamend and plenty of hay and veg.;)

SORRY JUST REALISED THAT MY 12 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER HAD POSTED THE ABOVE, WHILE I WAS DOWNSTAIRS! Think she needs to work on her spellings!

Thanks for all the advice. Im going to wait untill peppers stoped growing before I cut the food down. Pepper allready has all the same greens as Marble and hes not had any problems. They get greens most days and they get alot! I gave them a whole bag of sald eariler and a carrot each. I also pull up grass for them. Im going to try and change the hay and see if they perfer that. I think they eat about 50% of the pelets each because when I feed them they both eat from the same bowl at the same time!

Im amazed at how much they can eat! Also my baby piggies can get through greens quick too! lol

Veg is really important for piggies because they need the vitamin C. I have two boars, the adult is a bit of a runt and very small, the baby will no doubt soon outgrow him and they could probably eat their own body weight in veg. They start weeking everytime they see me. My otherhalf thinks I'm starving them - he doesn't really understand they are just greedy!:lol::lol:
