Rosie has gone blind :-( U/D Pic Added

Rosie Rabbit

Mama Doe
Rosie has had no sight in her right eye (due to a cataract) for a couple of years, and now, as we have recently suspected, she has lost the sight in her left eye too. :(

Her left eye has had a sort of shadow in it for some time - it's not opacity of the lens like a cataract, more like a shadow on the retina :? She sees a specialist eye vet from time to time, and he confirmed last week that there's now no sight in her left eye. He didn't give a reason though - does anyone know why this could be?

An obvious thought when she developed the cataract 2 years ago was EC, and she has had a 4-week course of Panacur (before 6 weeks were considered necessary). She hasn't shown any more signs of possible EC, although she has had stasis once in that time.

She seems fine in herself and loves her snuggles with us, although she has slowed down a bit and is sleeping more. We don't really know what age she is but we suspect she's older than we thought. She's also not binkying and running about as much, probably because she can't see where she's going :( Her hearing is also not great.

We spend loads of time with her giving her cuddles and and we keep her enviroment the same so as not to confuse her.

Does anyone have any other advice about her eye or insights about living with blind bunnies?

Thanks :)

I'm so sorry to hear of the blindness :( I wish you all the best! I'm sure someone will come along soon with some good advice

Oh I'm so sorry to hear this, poor Rosie :(

Glad to hear she is coping well though, and keeping the environment the same is very thoughtful :) Sorry, I have no more advice but hope someone with experience with this will be able to help

As long as her environment remains unchanged she will cope just fine :)
You may need to make sure you talk to her before attempting to touch her or pick her up.
Regular Vet checks for her eyes would be advisable as sometimes the 'drainage system' of the eyes can also be effected leading to a build up of pressure within the eye ( glaucoma ).

Thank you Jane :)

We're being careful to make sure nothing changes in her cage and run. We do have to talk to her or gently blow on her fur so she knows we're there, poor love. She sleeps so deeply there's no disturbing her when she's sound asleep!

The eye vet said not to take her back unless there are any changes, but we will keep a very close eye on her for any sign of change or discomfort.

Sorru Helen, I don't have any advice but I'm sending Rosie lots of love and Barney is sending snuggles. x

I'm sure Rosie appreciates her lovely home life, even if she can't see things anymore. I so want to give her a big cuddle!!

I'm sure she would love a cuddle from you - she seems to love any cuddles which come her way!

Bless her! I bet she is glad she is in a loving home with you :D

Send her a big snuggle from us:D

*sorry, no advice

Oh my, Rosie is very chuffed with all your cuddles and snuggles - thank you everyone :D

She has been out in the house tonight and is so clever at remembering her routes through the hall and into our dining room - she is still loving getting out sometimes :D

We just have to stay at her side in case of any bumped noses, but she does really well :D

Awww Rosie, im so sorry to hear she has lost her sight. Faye (Cottonmather) has a blind bunny - perhaps PM here for some advice.

She will be fine, as she has a super bunny mummy like you :D

Harvey has been totally blind from cataracts for a few months now and is coping pretty well. He still bumps into walls, doors, Daisy, our legs, etc but it doesn't stop him from exploring. He's still incredibly nosey

I think he finds comfort in having his ladybun around, although she might lose an eye too due to an abscess so they might end up having one good eye between the two of them!

I'm sure Rosie will be fine.

xx
