  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Hi

I am kinda stuck! He wont take it from the syringe - goes mad scrabbling away, he can even get out of the towel I wrap him in. I've tried mixing it with food, carrot juice, I've even got organic baby food (carrot & parsnip) and mixed it. He just won't take it.

Any suggestions? Would it be easier to give it by injection? The vets said this morning they may consider it if we REALLY cant get him to take it.

Anyone???

Another failed attempt - we tried to trance him, got ½ in him, then he freaked out and ran off.

I'd REALLY appreciate some help please?! I dont know what else to do, it's making me so stressed.

What medicine is it, and how much do you have to give him?

Have you tried kneeling on the floor and holding him between your legs? i.e. sit on your heels with your knees on the floor, and have bunny between your knees with his bum in your crotch and his head pointing forward. His natural instinct should be to back away, but your feet will be in the way, so he should wedge himself in the little gap between your legs

Good luck

Oh dear

What meds is he on. Baytril tastes :censored:
Have you tried mixing it with some Pineapple Juice or Ribena ?

When you wrap him in the towel do you cover his eyes. This generally helps.

I would not advise giving him oral meds whilst he is 'tranced' as he may aspirate them.

Some people have had success putting meds into a grape or a slice of banana.

My rabbit Brian (now in bunny heaven) refused to take anything by syringe etc and was a complete nightmare. As hard as we tried with towels etc nothing worked. Through trial and error we came up with a solution. Cut the end off a sprout (the hard bit) and then peel off the leaves one by one (very laborious). Put a tiny spot of medicine on the leaf and then sandwich another leaf on top. Repeat this until all medicine used up. We used this with both metacam and baytril and it worked a treat.

I used to hollow out a carrot and put Bellas meds in that....I used a skewer to take a bit out with.......my vet suggested putting it on toast but she didnt like that !
