Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

New Kit
Hi all

I posted on here last week when my bun came back from the vets to have his teeth burred & they all fell out (vet said were rotten) making it difficult for him to eat. Well it is now a week & he still cannot eat by himself (i syringe feed him critical care formula 4 times a day & he wants to eat - sucks leaves ets, but has no teeth to grind/chew with. Any suggestions wot i can give him so he can eat by himself. He won't eat soaked pellets or porridge or grated veggies & i am at a loss of wot else to offer him. Obviously i will continue syringe feeding him & try to coax him with anything he could possibly manage by himself. Also how long should it be before his gumms harden up so he can eat by himself ?? He is on dupaphen abs (vet thinks he may have osteomilitis in jaw), metacam & stuff (injection) to keep his gut moving (sorry dont know name)

Many thanx in anticipation,
rob

Oh dear poor Bun

What dose of Metacam is he on ? He may need additional analgesia such as Vetergesic or Torbugesic ( both opiates ).

Is he bright within himself ?

I would also ask the Vet about giving your Bun an anti GI Ulcer med ( Ranitidine or Cimetidine ) as GI ulceration can occur in Buns eating very little and on longterm Non Steroidal Anti-inflammatories ( eg Metacam ).

Until Buns pain is adequately controlled I doubt he will manage to eat by himself. Do you know how many teeth were lost ? Did the Vet take a skull Xray to determine the extent of osteomyelitis?

Thank you so much Jane - just been feeding him again & he did try some grated apple :D
He is on 8 drops of metacam (he weighs 2 kgs) & seems so bright in himself - just not able to eat since his teeth fell out last week.(not sure how many but vet said only few left :( )

TBH we are very disappointed in the vet (& he is the BEST in this area :() because he won't xray the jaw because he says the GA is too risky with this sick bun & his age (he's only 5 !) Also he says the treatment (metacam & dupaphen) would be the same if osteo militis was confirmed

Your vet sounds firstclass Jane - do you mind me asking where she is based please - i dessperately don't want to lose our poor lad 7 will take him wherever to get him the teeatment he so deserves.

I also have a truly excellent vet if Jacks-Jane vet is too far from you - I am in Cambridge. I am sure there are others who would also recommend superb vets.

PS 8 drops seems a lot - its usually a drop for every half kilo.

Could anyone please recommend a fantastic vet in Norwich (or norfolk or Cambridge) PLEASE.

Realy despeate to give our bun the best possible care available

Many thanx

Do you have a vets4pets we have 2 here n both have vets that specialise in rabbits just try ringing it if you have 1 near you

Sorry - I have been too busy all day to check on Rabbits United - but I have now PM's you.

If you have no success with an appt tomorrow as it is Saturday please e-mail me privately on twigs.way@ntlworld.com. I may be able to suggest alternative.

I am having my open day tomorrow but will check e-mails in the morning till about 1pm.

so sorry I did not check RU earlier - we were preparing garden for Open Day.

PS to keep his guts going whilst he is not eating you must start oral syringe feeding. I always use a plastic pipette rather than a syringe in case the syringe slips and some ends up going down the wrong way (and causes aspiration).

You should have some Rescue syringe feed (the vets should be able to give you some), OR you can also buy a smoothie maker/juicer and just juice vegetables and apple etc and oral feed that. I have even 'smoothied' dandelions in the past!!

Is your bun also drinking fluids?

The calculated dose of metacam is 0.6 mls for a bun his size. Not sure what that is in drops? Like Jane said he may need a vetergesic if he is still experiencing some discomfort.

I have a bun here at the moment who has just lost some molars and refused to eat. I've finally got him eating science selective soaked in cool boiled water. he is also now eating grass and dandelion leaves that have been chopped up.

Sorry I can't help with the vet situation :( I do think that you are right to request an x-ray though to establish the extent of the problem.

There's a good smoothie maker/juicer in Argos very cheap - its called 'Daisy' or something as its white with black spots like a cow. Its not the absolute cheapest but it does a good job and also catches both the juice AND the ground up bits - which are good for rabbits with few teeth or poorly mouths. It was a god send when we were trying to get Willow to eat again after her surgery.

thank you everyone for taking the time & trouble to reply - it is so much appreciated, Our bun is booked in to a a recommended vet at Cambridge tuesday afternoon - so fingers crossed, she can give him the treatment he really does deserve- he is such a gorgeous bun in every way & i will not give up on him 'til he decideds he's had enough ...& thats not yet!!

many thanx again,

rob
