Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Checking a big bun for flystrike? Help!

I check Verity over everyday, at the very least just once a day and she's fab with being held and checked. But Benjamin on the other hand.. He's rather large which doesn't help and he can give off the most powerful kicks and nasty scratches, it takes about an hour (not including breaks for him to chill out) just to get his nails done, he almost kicked me full blow in the chin yesterday.

As he's larger, he's obviously more prone to flystrike. He doesn't tolerate being held at ALL (even though I try almost every day since we got him), so turning him over to look at his bottom is impossible! I've tried wrapping him in towels and everything to keep him still but nothing works.

As it's getting really warm, and I keep seeing flies, how do I check his bottom? :(

Lots of people with buns that do not tolerate being held just touch and feel   You can get on the ground really low and look and his bum and give it a quick frisking, a mirror could be a useful tool too :)

Other than that I'm not sure what to suggest.

I too go for the quick peeping tom with most of my buns (only 3 of 11 will put up with being picked up easily, the rest range from difficult to rib busting all out fighting lunatics!). It feels kinky - but a quick 'touch up' from behind can re-assure that they are clean and dry. I also reargaurd them.

Should I buy rearguard to use on him? Or is it not needed? I did manage to check him last night after much fighting! It's just so much effort to do everyday! I'll definately try all the suggestions, thanks.

I'd also go for the quick grope underneath technique on the days when you can't pick your big bun up. But, you may find it easier to just lift the scut up when the bunny is grounded. You should be able to get a quick peek from behind if you are on the floor too.:D
