  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

What to do with wound?

Two of our bunnies just had a fight (out of nowhere..), one bun ended up with a wound in his forehead, it is very small, wound is open but not bleeding - like the skin was peeled off (skin still stuck in furr which is hanging - so wound can be closed with the skind... hard to explain...).

Wound looks completely clean - should we clean it anyway? And if so, with what? Bun is feeling good, eating etc.

Thanks:wave:

I'd give it a flush out with some boiled water (left to cool) with a pinch of salt in. They try and put the flap in roughly the right place.

It should scab over and the dead skin dry up and drop off.

Any swelling or oozing the see a vet asap.

Just a little warning, saffy had a little wound from a fight with joey before she was spayed, i washed the wound out with cool boiled water, it scabbed over nicely (im a human nurse so used to wounds!) but having lost 2 lops in the past to absess' that developed over weeks after a fight i took her to the vets anyway. He had a look and said it looked superficial however after picking the scab off he said it looked like it went deeper and better to be safe than sorry. They took her in and had to put her under GA to wash it out properly, they ended up having to open it up because they found it did track down. So glad i took her now! She wa stitched up and it healed beautifully.

I'd keep an eye on it too - some buns are prone to abscesses, so if there's any pus/cottage cheese, or lumps, bun will need a vet
