Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. White Spot In Eye. Please Help!!

Buddy

Young Bun
:wave:My bunny has a white spot in his left eye which doesn't seem to bother him but it is bothering me :(. I do have an appointment at the vets but wanted to know if anyone has any ideas what this could be before i go?? Thanks.

It sounds like it may be a cataract. One of the common causes of these is Encephalitozoon Cuniculi, a nasty little protozoa that is present in approx. 50% of domestic rabbits.

It would be well worth getting your bun onto a 6 week course of Panacur just incase.....it used to be 28 days but it is now believed due to the cyclical lifecycle of the spores this is not a sufficient lenght of time to eradicate the protozoa.

Hum... One of my french friends had the problem... We don't know if it was linked, but few weeks after this white point, she developed (I mean the bunnygirl) some parasit strike symptoms... like Ecuniculi... but without any cerebral symptoms (like eyes tilt): she was just more and more handicaped of the rear legs, and rear body (it took several weeks before getting this diagnosys). It hasen't been proved at any instant that the white point and parasit strike was the same...
It might be absolutely not that, but talk about a parasit strike with your vet.
Anyway, you have to see your vet ASAP...
It can be something totaly different. I don't want to afraid you.
I can try to get a photo of this white point, and more info if you wanted to.

Thanks everyone for your info!! I have taken my bun to the vets & she advised it is a parasite (EC) so you are correct! Got to give him 9 days of Panacur & Antibiotics. Doesn't seem long enough but got to take him back next Monday for another checkup.

Yes, it's not a long enough course at all.....9 days is the annual preventative dose.

28 days (now 6 weeks) is the course for suspected active cases, if your vet refuses to subscribe this then youcan buy Panacur online....it's a non-prescription medication and it's cheaper online too.

It sounds like E. Cuniculi unfortunately. White spots in the eyes is something the vet will always look for when trying to diagnose the condition. Whenever buster goes for a check up (she has EC) she always checks her eyes.

Yes i will ask the vet if they can extend the dosage in that case. Is this disease contracted by humans as i've read it does on website or is that a load of rubbish??

It *may* be able to be contracted by severely immuno-compromised individuals but I have not actually heard of it happening.

Was this the article you read: RWAF E.Cuniculi

It wasn't that exact article but it found it on google. Thanks for your help!! Will let you know what the vet says next week.

We'll if you havn't already read it I would thoroughly reccomend doing so now, it's quite comprehensive and will give you a good idea of what your dealing with and what needs to be done :)

Good Luck

Some Advice Please!!

:wave:I have taken my bun to the vets for his after treatment check but not good news. The vet has also spotted another white mark appearing on his other eye. The vet has given me some more antibiotics & panacur & wants me to take him to see a Rabbit Eye Specialist to rule out any tumours. If it is just EC do i have to give my bun panacur frequently and will it ever get any better?? Your help would be greatly appreciated!

Your Rabbit will need to remain on Panacur for a minimum of 6 weeks. Unfortunately once EC related damage occurs to the lens it is irreversible. Sometimes the Bun can go on to develop a Uveitis which will need treating with abx/steroidal eye drops. Your Vet may recommend you routinely treat your Bun with a 9 day course of Panacur 2-4 times a year once this acute problem has been addressed.

If your Bun is in contact with any other Buns or shares the same terrain as other Buns then all the other Buns need treating with Panacur too as EC spores are shed in the affected Bun's wee.

Good luck with the Opthalmic referal

Janex :)
