Teeth Problems...... Humpfrey

lisabunnie

Alpha Buck
We have had a bun brought in with really bad teeth.

The back ones were burred down on tues (27th May) when he went for his post op check on sat they were really bad again:shock:

He is very very thin and will only eat carrots, no hay no pellets no other veg (i'm having to syringe feed him)

my questions are

Can the spurs grow back that quickly? Has the vet not burred them properly?

Can he have his back teeth removed??

How the hell can i get him to eat hay, he has never had it before he is around three years old.

He is fairly heathly other than his teeth and buzzes away on his bear like there is no tomorrow! (just been neutered too)

all help gratefully received.

i don't believe they would have grown back in a couple of days... i would be questioning the vet really x

I thought so,

We've had loads of dental bunnies and never had this before.

It wasn't the usual vet that we see

They can't have grown back that quickly! Were they burred under GA the first time?

Molars *can* be removed but it's not widely recommended and it usually requires them to be in the latter stages of decay i.e. damaged roots/osteomyleitis rather than attempting to extract an otherwise healthy root. I would say it's a specialist job.

There can be some very nasty side effects such as bone infections and abcessation and it's not unknow for the jaw to be broken either :?

Hi, once I had to take my bun back after 5 days and questioned whether they had been done properly (that particular one was a conscious dental) - my trusted vet had done them but I suspect that the one in question had been "missed". This has only happened once, he is normally excellent and I trust him 100%.

One of mine will not eat hay either no matter what I try. Can you try your bunny with some grass. I also bought some "grow your own" from hay experts and it grows into long grass so helps with the teeth a little.

I have asked my vet about teeth removal and it is a no no. The condition is controlled by having monthly conscious dentals (as he does not eat hay!!)

They were burred under GA

He is gonna have to be a care for life bunnie, going to the vets really stresses him so i was hoping to get then removed (if it wasn't a big deal) but it looks like that is out of the question now.

Tried grass not interested only carrots thats all his previos owners must have fed him. He did arrive with some dry pellets but he hasnt touched them and they seem 'old' and too dried out.
