Types of Hay

Cyberdog

Warren Scout
Hi,
I have just opened a new bag of hay I got from a local pet shop. It is much less course than my usual, and has a sweet scented smell to it. The rabbits can’t get enough of it, but what gives it that scented smell, and is it ok for them to eat as it says on the bag “pet bedding”.:?:?
You can tell i am new to this game.

Fresh hay which has been kept well usually has a lovely sweet smell, hay which is damp, dusty and poorly looked after smells not so nice. Green hay is often the nicest of hays .........

To be honest most hays are suitable for rabbits to eat or use as bedding, they will eat it where ever it is put.

There are many companies who specialise in hay of many different types, some are nice soft hays others are course, some rabbits like coarse hays, others prefer soft. Many sell small trial bags you can purchase to see what your rabbit likes.

They only hay which I would not recommend to anyone is the prepacked bags of compressed hay which is compressed in bags and is 'chopped' and comes in small bits. To me it always looks like the bits which are the unwanted leftovers after the better bits have been removed

O dear, the one i have is in a bag but i would not say it was very compressed, and comes from a company called "Comfy Pet" ans is a finer hay than i usually get.

The hay I get from the pet shop is finely chopped and very soft, and i use this for bedding, but the girls still eat it. They have lovely Amercian Timothy to eat which they love.

There is nothing wrong with fine hay, some rabbits prefer fine hay rather than course hay. Next time some one gives me a bag of the hay I am talking about I will photograph it against some better hays and you will see the difference. Some brands of hay are worse than others, I am not familiar with Comfy pet.

The hay I am talking about it brown, cut into small sections and has not no particular smell that I put down to fresh green hay. I guess is is a finer version of straw cut into smaller pieces.
