Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

any ideas for helping elderly bun 'problems'?

parsnipbun

Wise Old Thumper
My 9+ years old netherland dwarf x is looking very stiff recently, as though his hips/knees don't have any movement, and his coat is not looking so shiny etc.

He has a bit of an on/off eye thing as well - which was under control but has come back so I guess he is feeling low.

For the last week I have put him on 2 drops of metacam a day (he's only about 1.3 kg now), and a few extra bits of the food 'mix' as well as his pellets - to try and put weight on him.

I know there is no cure for age - but I am sure its this rotten weather thats making him suddenly look and feel very elderly - (its rained all week here)

Has anyone any ideas of anything we could do to help him? He lives outside with his two friends - and moving them all indoors isn't really an option as we already have two pairs indoors. So any other ideas anyone?? Anything will be considered and all suggestions very welcome.

hi sooz - thanks for the hint - seem to recall being 'involved' or reading a glucosamine thread here before. We did once try to use it on our wonderful 3 legged Florence (obviously for the rest of her joints not the missing one lol!) but could not find dosages etc for rabbits and were rather scared of using it as it didn't seem rabbit specific.

However I would be very willing to give it a try with Sweet Pea if anyone has any dosages etc.

What do you use and how and how much? And do you have one that is rabbit specific?

Any other supplements that might help him? Migt see what the vet says about accupuncture as well - it works wonders for our giant Bluebell on her slightly 'off' leg - but thats not due to age

I'm pretty sure Theo (Snowy) uses it....maybe PM her and ask? I've never had a bun get to the OAP stage really, my 8 & 7 year old were always great with their joints, so I've never personally tried it.
