Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Hi,
Im taken my male rabbit tomorrow to be nuetered poor thing :(. I was just wondering if it was right what they told me when I booked him in that he can carry on having food right up till I take him. Its what I thought you did. But ive just spoken to my ohs sister and she asked what time his last meal was coz when she took her rabbit to a different vets they told her not to feed him after 9pm the night before?? Could someone please tell me which is right as im really worried now

Rabbits should not be fasted before an operation as they are unable to vomit which is the reason other animals and people are fasted.

Rabbit's are also designed to be processing food through the gastro-intestinal tract constantly so a shortage of food can cause GI motility to slow and when a GA is given as well it will exacerbate this, making it harder to get the GI tract back up to speed after the operation and risking GI Stasis.

Thanks for that. I thought I was right in saying that you keep feeding them but when someone said otherwise I thought Id better check

That's curious---makes sense. My vet said not to feed pip after midnight the night before his surgery.

I always take that as a sign of a vet that dosn't know their rabbits from their cats....best avoided at all costs.

That said, sometimes it's just the receptionist passing on incorrect (and dangerous) information and if you speak to the actual vet they will tell you not to fast.

Yeah continue to feed. When I took Blackie in this morning the first thing the vet asked me was if I had starved Blackie so I told him I hadnt and he was very pleased to hear that.

Yes hes had his op poor little fella. He seems quite lively considering. Hes in his cage resting. He isnt really interested in food yet. He was fed after the op. Hes had a big wee and done a couple of poos so thats a good sign. Hopefully his appetite will return soon. We are back to the vets on Friday for a check up.
