Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Rabbit loosing fur

:?I have 2 black and white dutch rabbits and one of them looks as if he is starting to loose fur or it it has changed colour. It is going a patchy colour on his back. Part of his coat is black and the other part is a greyish brown colour. He also seems to be constantly grooming it. Has anyone come across this before?

If he's not in moult, have you had his teeth checked? It's a common problem for overgrooming.

Over-grooming can also be due to stress, has anything changed in his environment lately.

Could he have mites?

Thanks for the reply Sooz, when you say have you checked his teeth what should I look for, I dont think anything has happened to him to make him stressed but he has always been the more timid one of the two.

Hi

He should have his teeth checked by a vet, you should be able to check his incisors yourself....they should be straight and all meet in the middle.....but to see his molars the vet will need to use an otoscope to look inside his mouth.

My friends rabbit recently chewed all the fur from his front paws because he had molar spurs but I know of buns who have overgroomed their backs too.

why do rabbits who have overgrown teeth overgroom. i must admit, i have not heard of this before and its not something i have come across
