  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Last weekend Jess had a bout of stasis (the worst couple of days ever!) but is slowly recovering eating more and pooing well! However, he doesn't seem to be drinking much. Could this be a problem? Shall i try syringing him?

I dont know about syringing - I do know it's not good for rabbits to get dehydrated and they can do very quickly. So long as he is drinking though why not encourage him to drink more...

If he usually has a bottle, try a bowl (as well or instead).

Put something nice in the water to tempt him - a drop of pure fruit juice like pineapple. (Muppet loves pineapple juice so I know things are bad if he wont drink even that.) It's tricky cos fruit juices are sugary, so dont give him too much as the excess sugar will just aggravate his stomach, but diluted to make water taste nice may encourage him.

water in a bowl, warmed with a splash from the kettle - preferable to fruit juice if there's been tummy problems. Also put the dish in front of him when it's ready - Benny will drink if I do that, whereas he wouldn't think of hopping into his hutch for a drink, just a couple of feet away  Mine all love their water warm though - don't use the hot tap as it has bacteria in :)
