Yeah i get that alot i always blame the kids
Bought them some of those bannana treat things rabbit loves them and some clover leaf treats that have carrot and parsley and stuff in them. He seems to prefer the treats to the veg he loves chomping on them assume this is good for his teeth. Tend to buy the natural treats though as dont want a fat bunny on my hands.

Yeah any melon.I've heard you can give them the skin on but i always take it off. They seem to love melon, well my bunnies and guinea pigs do_O and pear too especially juicy ones haha o and celery....see i knew the old brain matter would work again:lol:

diet

Sorry to be a bit boring..... but. The right diet for a rabbit mimmics as closely as possible the natural diet of rabbits in central spain and portugal.

This is coarse grasses and scrubland in large quantities.

We all like to treat our buns but any owner should be aware that treating them with soft veg and fruit is perhaps not that wise and can have a severe detrimental effect on a rabbits teeth long term.

We always recommend "non man made veg" ie dandilions, handfuls of fresh grass, parsley , parcel and a specialist hay such as Timothy .

We never recommend fruit because of the sugar it contains and In fact we have a bunny with us now whose teeth were dark brown due to acid erosion and the diet it was on. As it would happen her rear teeth were in reasonable condition albeit brown and over the last two months with us on the right diet her teeth have gradually gone back to white from the roots.

I know this all sounds like a rant so I give my appologies ....but if anyone who reads this had seen all the bunnies we have with dental problems such as spikes ,spurs, abscesses and dental erosion and then read the recommendations people give as to what veg and fruit a rabbit can and will eat you would see my point.

One final point ...As a rescue centre we are unable to re-home rabbits with rear dental problems as listed above. Rear dental problems are re-occurring and in effect there is no permanent solution to them . This means the rabbit with such problems will suffer in future often in silence and without the average owner realising. This is the primary reason all such rabbits effected are put to sleep by a vet . Add in to this that it becomes more difficult to pair up, ensure both rabbits can eat the right diet and finally with a policy of complete openness...new owners just do not want rabbits with large ferequent vets bill attached. It is our own observation that 25-30% of all rabbits have dental problems caused by the wrong diet.

You have been warned.:(.......keep to the right diet!

He has loads of grass and dandilions we have a huge garden that he has his run in and gets moved around. If he cant go out then the kids will pick dandilions and grass for him. Both rabbit and guinea pigs also have fresh hay in a hay manger on the fronts of there cages. FRom reading what you have put rabbit doesnt really need any veg on top of that. Thanks for your advice. Would you still recomend i gave the guinea pigs a bit of veg though they are fed gerty guinea pig as well as grass, hay dandilions etc or is this enough for them as well. They also all have mineral blocks that they knaw on.
Sorry for so many questions just want to make sure they are healthy :D

melon or any new food, especially fruit, can kill a rabbit so I would be very cautious. Guinea pigs have stronger stomachs but can still get bloated up if they eat too much fresh food, especially new stuff they've not eaten before.

If you want to try them on something new they must only have a tiny piece as big as a postage stamp - then over the course of 2 weeks you can slowly increase the portion size, but really it's not worth the bother for something like melon which you won't be giving them all the time. Just a mouthful won't hurt though.

guinea pigs need more fresh food than rabbits as they need extra vitamin C, but rabbits only really need it as a treat once a day, and not a lot then - just a leaf of greens and a small chunk of carrot is fine, or a big handful of long fresh grass and dandelions is what mine are getting at the moment, as their run is on concrete - the piggies go mad for that too :)

Oops should have said that about wee bits to start with, just assume people woluld do that.I don't overfeed my rabbits or guinea pigs fruit and veg,the fruit is more a treat and i've got to be honest i've never (touch wood) had any problems with my rabbits teeth or stomachs, having had them many years, same with my guinea pigs apart from one who is prone to abcesses (trying new treatment, which again touch wood, seems to be working) and shee is 5.I wouldn;t do anything to harm them intentionally but thank you for your advice:wave:

oh I wasn't aiming it at you :D just when I first got rabbits, on another forum all the more experienced members advised a newbie that rabbits love melon - no portion size or anything just 'they love melon' - her rabbit died from enteritis a couple of days later, after she'd given it a whole slice  of melon (8wk old baby rabbit :() - so I never hesitate now to dive in with words of warning - I really regret that I didn't on that occasion but I was a newbie too

Ah but i should have said myself,i'll do that in future as i understand where your coming from and wouldn't forgive myself if someone gave too much and the wee bunny etc got sick.:D Sometimes my fingers work faster than thee old brain:rolleyes::oops::lol:
