Food recommendation

Young Bun
I'm in the process of getting a rabbit. Its going to be a house rabbit, i've got a big indoor cage, litter trays, toys, tunnels, brushes, bowls etc, (no rabbit yet though! )

I've now come a bit unstuck with what to feed. i know the basics, about hay and veggies etc, but which brand of pellets? i spent about an hour in pets at home today looking at the bags of rabbit food and came away without anything

so recommendations please! is one brand better than another, pellets or museli? i thought feeding horses was bad, this is worse i think

To start you need to carry on feeding the bun with the food it is already being fed. Then at a later date you can wean bun onto new food over a course of about 10 days.

Any new food needs to be done slowly and bit by bit looking our for upset tums!:)

i think Science Selective and A&P Pellets are the most popular on here followed by Burgess Excel. SS and Excel are readily available in most pet stores and online, A&P is a bit specialist, there's a link somewhere....

pellets are better than museli mixes and it's important to know that pellets should only make up 5% of the daily diet, or you'll have a tubby bunny on your hands.

 HI THERE, TO BE HONEST I WOULD STICK WITH PELLETS, HAS WITH MUESLI THE BUN TENDS TO PICK WHAT THEY LIKE BEST OUT! I USE SCIENCE SELECTIVE WHICH IS GREAT FOR THE WEAR OF THE TEETH AND DIGESTIVE HEALTH.BUT THERE ARE OTHERS IM SURE PEOPLE WILL ADVICE, BUT THE BEST THING FOR BUNS REALLY IS THAT THEY GET A ENDLESS SUPPLY OF HAY.POPPY LOVES HER SCIENCE SELECTIVE:)

HAVE YOU LOOKED ON THIS FORUM THERE ARE MANY BUNS NEEDING HOMES FROM THE RESCUES, PLUS MAJORITY HAVE BEEN VACCINATED AND NEUTERED:oops:, SAVING YOU WORRY :roll:AND MONEY.
BEST OF LUCK

Most people on here feed Science Selective which is quite expensive. There is also Supa Rabbit Excelt which some people prefer. Personally I feed them Wagg Optimum which is quite cheap in sainsburys. They all contain just one type of item so that the rabbit can't selectively feed on just the bits they like.

I have, but I'm in Milton Keynes and only have a motorbike as transport, so not really suitable for a bunny  I've contacted some local breeders though as the next best thing

woo, MK! not far away from me!

When i first got my rabbit and guinea i kept feeding them the food they'd already been fed, and then gradually weened them onto Pets at Home Museli, i thought it was a bit more variety for them :) Hope that helps a tad :?

That is so true! I might put mine on pellets then!! Cheeky things.
Also i feed them both guinea pig food as guinea pig food contains extra vitamin c of which guinea pigs need and rabbits can eat it too and just poo any excess v-c out.
Yeah so pellets maybe would be better so they eat all their tea up :)

I'm sure many rescues from your local area will deliver any lucky rabbits if you do chose to adopt :)

Ive given my last 2buns excel[which they sell at pets at home].When they were fully grown i weaned them to a handful of this a day,as much veg as they would eat in the evening and unlimited supplies of hay/grass throughout the day. This hay/veggy diet works wonders for their teeth and as Will weighed 15lbs they obviously weren't under fed.B prefers hay to anything and when she was ill recently it was the hay that kept her going when she refused all else.My buns before were on Russel Rabbit and just picked out what they liked, they also weren't big hay eaters and consequently had overgrown molars. Not saying this happens to all buns but after these experiances i decided ,after reading an article, that i would give the hay/veggy diet a go and have never looked back since.I'm not a horrible mum though, she is allowed a few treats with Daddy before bed!!!

Hi Obicat! I'm in Milton Keynes too - I've sent you a private message - check your Rabbitrehome 'in' box!! Oh - and I use Science Selective - you can buy it at Jolleys in Westcroft. I don't think P@H sell it but they do sell Burgess Excel which is just as good. Basically, you want a pelleted food which has a high fibre content. I wouldn't go for a museli type food.
