  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

one of Traceys buns had its vhd jab this morning ....now she has developed an inflaned sore area around the site of the vaccination .... she is scatching it like mad and is breaking the skin .

obviously this must be some sort of allergic reaction and Tracey is on her way back to the vets in 5 mins ...

Any one had similar and what did you do? :?

its the cylap vaccine shes had

Yep Angie I have seen some really nasty local skin reactions to Cylap.

Bun will need anti-inflammatories for a few days. The Vet who gave the vaccine may not have used a new needle from the one used to draw it up and may not have inserted the needle fully subcut'.

If the reaction is extensive it will take several weeks to heal  Years ago one of my Buns ended up with a huge scabed wound the size of a saucer

The Vet also needs to notify the manufacturers

Thanks ...

Bunny Is Now On Metacam...

Will Tell Them About Informing Manufacturers :(

Knowing the rabbit had a reaction they should automatically inform the manufacturer. The manufacturer is then supposed to contact you. In theory, if you have ended up with vets bills because of the vaccination you can claim the money back.

My previous bunny Harvey had a bad reaction the first time he had the VHD vacc - a huge round sore that looked awful, though didn't seem to bother him too much. I rang the vet and they said to keep an eye on it - didn't get antibiotics or anything - and they said to go back the following morning if I was worried. If it was now I'd have been straight back down the vet but it was the first time I'd had a bunny VHD vaccd. Luckily it healed quite quickly.

The following year he had the other type and was fine.

Hope the bunny heals quickly.
