Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Is Parrafin ok to give buns?

Kay

Mama Doe
As in my other thread about Arthur having Statis the vet has given Parrafin liquid to be given twice a day but a comment in the thread suggests its not wise to give to a bunny.

Any help please?

Thank you x

No it's not.

I will just find the exact quote as Im lazy and it's easier to quote myself than write it again :oops:

Doseing the rabbit with oil based lubricants means that the dehydrated ingesta in the gut is covered by an oily coat. Chemistry 101.... oil repels water.Therefor the dehydrated mass cannot become rehydrated, cannot change shape or break down and bunny is stuck with an oily but immovable stomach blockage.

This places the rabbit in a dubious condition....risk using gut stimulants and prospectively rupturing the gut or attempt extremely dangerous GI surgery

Oh  good job for this place then! The vet is a specialist cat vet and clearly doesn't know enough about buns then. My normal vet a lovely lady called Caroline wasn't in tonight.

So is there anything I should give instead of the parrafin?

edit to say thats disgusting that the vet would do something like that. He has given Arthur 2ml already will he be ok?

That is EXACTLY what I would expect to hear from a cat vet, your not the first and wont be the last either.

Lots and lots of warm water and fiberplex if you have any.

Never heard of fiberplex but I'll try and get some. I have been doing warm water phew.

Thank heavens for you Sooz I could hug you!

The vet kept going on about Arthur's bitten ear saying 'oh its healed just like a cats would' and 'oh if he was a cat I'd suggest doing so and so', my partner was getting cheesed off and said 'yeah but he's a rabbit, can we get back to what you'd give them'.

:thumb: your a star!!!

Thank you so much from me and Arthur

No problem. If you can get him eating hay, grass or ready grass that will help too. :)

Dont give him anything that may absorb liquid until the paraffin he has ingested has passed as you need to keep his gut ingesta moist.

Gorgeous pic by the way

He has only been given hay, readigrass and has access to the grass in his run tonight no pellets at all, so I am really pleased about that. He loves his timmy hay and dry herb mix and has been munching on that.

He is very photo genic bless him

Kay,
I am so pleased that Arthur hasn't had much paraffin.

I hope my post didn't come across as critical to you at all on the other thread. OH was grumpy that I was stilll on here :( and I just dashed it off.

I have my fingers crossed that Arthur is over the worst and will soon be back to normal.
Vanessa xx

Oh no Vanessa I was going to thank you today anyway. If you hadn't mentioned it who knows what a state he'd be in.

Arthur and I say a massive thank you to you too :D

This morning I have left a bowl of warm water and another bowl with apple soaked in water. He is still recovering and quiet but has eaten some apple and hay this morning.

No problem, honestly you saved Arthur a lot of pain and grief.

I'll get you another photo of Dylan soon :D as your the co founder of the Dylan fan club along with me  plus you helped talk me into keeping him! :D

big hugs
