  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Otitis Media

My friend has just text me to say that her elderly bun has Otitis Media and it has paralysed part of his face and legs on one side. Anyone ever heard of it? Its an inner ear infection isnt' it? Will it go? I have just text her to ask her if he is on treatment for it? She also has another bun who is having penicillen injections for inoperable abscesses :( What a stressful time :(

I'd have thought it would respond to antibiotics the same way it does in humans.....inner ear infections can make humans balance go funny and cause dizziness too.....not had any experience with it in rabbits tho!

well i know when my 22 yr old gets an ear infection it sets off nerves right down his face and neck....could it maybe be something like that?

No they are only treating for Otitis Media... he is having Baytril, shall I recommend Panacur course to my friend? 9 days, 4 weeks, 6 weeks?

Edit.... just found out that he is having Panacur.

Some anti-inflams would help too if he isnt already having any

Janex :)

Apparently they are getting a pasturella type substance out of his ear when they put the drops in. I went to see him yesterday and he is very well in himself and sitting up, but his face just looks like he has had a stroke.

Which anti inflamms would be best Jane? x
