  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

ive read lots about people handling their rabbits by holding the scruff of their neck and supporting the rump, does this hurt the rabbit? also mine doesnt have a scruff of the neck is this normal or does it mean he's underweight he looks the right size to me

i never scruff my rabbit as i think it is cruel also the bigger the rabbit is the more likely it is to hurt it, hold under thier front paws and support their bum. the scruff is just the fur and skin at back of neck so your bunny would have one and personally i dont like it to be done ever.

I dont 'scruff' rabbits to pick them up....I use the same method as Bunlover.

However I do sometimes pin their ears back to the scruff to control head movement when giving oral meds or examining teeth but I never exert any pressure on this area by attempting a lift.

I scruff my wrigglers (with hand under their bottom too, of course!). It just gives a bit of extra security so they can't jump out of your arms and injure themselves.

i havent scruffed him as i dont really like the idea but i had a go in case a time arises where i might need to but the skin doesnt seem loose enough for me to cup

i'm not sure about it... I don't have a problem with dogs and cats cos their mum will pick them up by the scruff, but rabbits aren't really designed to be scruffed... :?

thats what i thought although only ever done it with a small puppy jack russel not been round kittens but it does just seem that rabbits arent built to be handled like that although if it works for some and theyre not in pain then its ok

One of my vets scruffed Bandit when she went in the other week. She has enough skin to do that though... A smaller skinnier bunny i would hope they didnt do it to...
I was surprised when she did it as the other one didnt but Bandit was the quietest i have ever seen her, no struggling or fidgeting and when the vet popped her back in she was non the worse for wear...:)

Edited to say that she had Bandit on her back in the crook of her arm whilst being scruffed so she wasn't dangling or any pressure put on her neck
