Hay again...

CLAREM1

Warren Scout
Sorry if I seem to be going on about the same thing over and over but could you let me know what hay you all use or recommend.

I've got my options as get a hay bale from a local farm (although i'm thinking if I buy a bale they may not like it/or it might not contain much goodness as I haven't a clue what I'm looking for)

Dustfreehay.co.uk but I'm not sure which one to go for here either and they seem expensive although if they last ages I suppose not?

Hayexperts again though I don't know which one to go for here and there are lots of options

Or not on line somewhere like p@h or Jolleys do they have anything of any good

Should I use something better quality for Hay rack and something else for lining im confused

HELP!!!

I use hay from my local farm shop, my bunnies love it and it's really cheap and much better quality than some you buy from pet shops. It depends how many bunnies you have really as to whether you need a bale.
I do because I have 4 and 2 of them are giants and they eat for England!

If you only have 1 or 2 little ones a bale may go off once opened up. THe specialist hays are good as a treat though as the bunnies love them.
I give mine Excel Forage and Herbage as a treat. It's about £2.50 a bag from P@H and they love them.

I get straw and hay from my local pet shop to put on the floor of the hutch (cos one of them has sore hocks) and I get 5 boxes of Amercian Timothy Hay from DustFree.

I use large bales of hay from my local riding school as "hay hay" and Excel Forage and Herbage and P@H Timothy hay as "Treat hay" kinda all mixed up together!

I was buying the £25.99 large bale from dust free, but thanks to Julia123 I now use a local farm shop that I can get bales from for £3.75. The buns seem to like it just as much, and it is now unlimited because of how cheap and easy it is to get hold off. If you post your rough location other members may be able to advise of where to source locally. I transport mine in an old single duvet cover.........

I get the biggest bales from jollies (got 2 bunnies and 9 guinea pigs), as they are the only local shop that keeps big enough bales. Can't remember just how much, but its should be less then a tenner and lasts me 3 to 4 weeks. Handy because we don't have much access to a car (shared with his dad) and its cheaper to buy in bulk. Have never had any problems with this hay.

Muppet likes the timothy hay from there :D And occasionally I buy the taster pack so he can try out others, for variety, but the timothy hay is his main staple.

if you buy a bale of hay from a farm it shouldnt go off if you keep it in a cool dark dry place
i buy 65 a year for the horse and they only start to go a bit green after a year or so.

Me too, it doesn't look fabulous quality to me but it smells nice and Fidget eats it like it's going out of fashion, and it's cheap, so I can't complain.

I buy a £3.50 bale from an animal feed outlet that I use for bedding and litter trays, then I buy 15kg of Timothy Hay, the bales of Readigrass, Burns Oat Hay and the soft Dust Free Hay for eating - I rotate it so they have a selection:oops:

i got sent 2 free bags of burgess hay what rosie won and they love it got to admit i love the smell too:lol: but its bit expensive for the amount they go through i get large bales from a garden centre

Bales from the farm are much nicer than the bags from the pet shops. Keep the bale tightly packed and stored off the floor and just pull chunks off. It's the same quality as the stuff from dust free and a damn sight cheaper (mine is £3.50 a bale which lasts 4 buns for a couple of months- feed and bedding).
