  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Abcess Returns

My Rabbit had an abscess removed some time ago now which was related to a rotton tooth.

He was originally put on Baytril afterwards but the vet changed him to having injections of Depocillin which he had weekly.

However for the last 3 months the vet changed the injections of Depocillin to Monthly and things have been fine up until today.

I have noticed that the abcess is back but slightly right of the original abcess site. I shall be in contact with my vet in the morning when he re-opens from the bank holiday and was wondering if there was any other kind of antibiotic that is better than Depocillin that anyone could recommend?

My rabbit is now just over 7 years old and I don't really want to put him through surgery again as because of his age I am scared of losing him so if anyone knows of a really good antibiotic please let me know

I have used Ceporex on abscesses but couldn't say whether it is any better than Depocillin. Hope your vet can help you tomorrow

get it looked at and suggest a anti biotic capsule put in the space were the abcess is. have had2 with that and it works a treat.
