  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Non-Dissolve-able Stitches?

foxyfaerie

Mama Doe
Azrael was spayed yesterday & when I picked her up I was told she would need returned in 10 days to have her stitches removed.

Lucifer had dissolve-able stitches when she was spayed so I'm not sure of the procedure (was a bit taken aback when the above was said to me so I didn't ask *head-desk*). Is it a 10 minute vet visit or will she need to go in for a day?

A ten minute or less Vet visit

Janex :)

Keep a close eye on her though. Faline pulled her own stitches out. :?

I know; I've been if she chews to call them to get a Buster collar they "should have one small enough" (it's hard to tell from the photo, Azrael is a 3lb Lionhead).

Was it a different vet that operated on her?
Internal disolvable sutures are much more difficult to do - maybe it was an inexperienced vet and that's why they used external sutures.
I'm not a lover of external sutures as bunnies are much more likely to chew them out. Rabbits hate buster collars and they can cause great stress - only use one if there is absolutely no alternative.
Give her a snuggle from all of us x

The vet will be able to do it then and there as long as Azrael is calm and not stressed in any way. Sometimes nearer the end the stitches can look like they are loosening off but they should be alright. x

What vets did you use? Wasn't the ones nr cleator by any chance?

Yea, I've used Galemire for years with no problems.

I honestly don't know; we don't get a set vet, we just get a vet although obviously a rabbit-savvy one. She's not a fan of snuggles at the moment but she's getting frequent nose-rubs which she loves!

That's the ones I used. I liked them. :) I did find the vets were often young or from abroad. I liked the Australian vet. So perhaps that's why they do external stitches as Donna says.

Could be. I did my work experience with them when I was 16 - they were really good with that & that made me a little happier, even though I knew less about most things that I do now!
