  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Hi, a girl in my work has the human equivelant of BSE, I don't know much about this but apparently it is highly contagious.
As far as I am aware does it only affect 'hooved' animals???

Is my little bunny in any danger as I have been in close contact with this girl for 3 days??? :?:?:?:shock::shock::?:?:?

Ummm...... If she has CJD (human BSE) then she got it from eating beef infected. It's not contagious, that is unless you plan to kill her and eat her offal or spinal column (sorry to be blunt but thats the way it is )

You and your bunny are perfectly safe, I just feel sorry for the girl. :(

Siona, I love that one of your bunnies is called Gladys Emmanuelle, if I get another I may have to call him Arkwright or Ger.Ger.Ger.Ger.Granville!!! lol :lol::lol::lol:

Thanks  She has a rather large bosom so it seemed to fit!

poor poor girl. She has CJD.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creutzfeldt-Jakob_Disease

It is caused by a thing (only way to describe it really) called a prion. This basically goes in and unlocks all the proteins in your brain making them useless. It is like alziehmers (sp) but also means you also loose physical control of your body. It is fatal.

You can get it unless you consume infected brain, spinal column or lymph nodes or having injections for things like human growth hormone or from having a genetic disposition to it so you can't possibly get it from her.

and actually the disease as it has panned out does not seem that easy to catch from infected beef either. I think the number of humans that died from new varient CJD which is the one scientists think might be caused by eating infected beef is very low (in the hundreds since it was first discovered in 1996 and falling each year...there could be an underlying sink of people that haven't gone on to develop it but considering it would have been in cattle for possibly 20 years by now, that seems increasingly unlikely)

That poor girl, and her family as well. They must be going through hell if that is what she's got. What an awful way to lose someone you care for.

I find it inappropriate that some are making jokes about a someone that is now dying in a horrific way. Would you make jokes if she had cancer? Somehow I don't think so.

These cases are extremely rare and far between, and sufferers do become extremely debilitated, so I would be suprised if she would still be in a state to work by the the time diagnosis was reached TBH.
I apologise if I caused offense with my comment, it was meant only to set OP's mind at rest and lighten the tone somewhat.
