  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Swelling after neutering? Advice Please.

Upton was neutered yesterday and has been eating and pooing well but this morning his scrotum is swollen (the size of two marbles). Is this normal, just fluid build up?
When we had a dog neutered a few years ago the same thing happen in the day or two following the procedure and the vet said it was normal.

I'm asking here as it's too early to phone the vets as yet.

Some swelling is normal and should reduce significantly within 48 hours.
As long as he is eating and pooing just keep a close eye on him this morning.
If he keeps licking his sore plums or if his poos remain very small or few in number I'd request a couple of days of Metacam for him from your Vet.
If his plums feel very hard and hot it would be a good idea to get him examined by the Vet again to err on the side of caution.

Thanks, :)

He's not licking or worrying at the wound and is hapily munching hay. He has to go back for a check up on Friday and again next week anyway so unless he is looking more off colour I will wait until Friday.

Oscar's swelled rall bad after his op it took him bk to the vets the following day and he needed antibiotics as he'd got an infection from licking his stiches - even though I hadn't seen him do it!
I'd take him to the vets sooner as he may need antibiotics too.

I've just called the vet and they've said as long as he's eating drinking and going to the loo then just to keep an eye on him and take him down tomorrow rather than Friday (it should have been Thursday anyway but I didn't think I could make it so changed to Friday,I have been able to sort out time on Thursday now though).

They gave him a shot of antibiotic yesterday so they don't think infection will have set in and the swelling is just fluid and perhaps a reaction to the sutures but the suture area itself is clean and dry.
