Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Help - why is she off her hay? - U/D

Sorrel has hardly eaten any hay for two days and doesn't seem to have drunk much either. She is still her normal self and is begging frantically for veg and pellets as usual. She is behaving normally although seems more affectionate than usual and keeps jumping on my lap for long cuddles.

Does anyone know what would cause this?

Sorrel has problems with elongated tooth roots and an abscess but the only time she has been off her food before was directly after a dental - even before a dental when she has bad spurs she eats as normal.

Is she on any pain relief? If she isn't, it may be that her teeth are causing her some pain and that is why she isn't eating hay.

I would be tempted to take her to the vets for a check up, just to put your mind at rest.

The only other thing I can think of is have you changed the hay at all?

thanks donnamt :)I've had to nip to my mum's for a bit so I've locked her in her crate with a big pile of timothy hay which she loves but normally only has so a treat...on my way back soon so I'll see if she's made any attempt on it.

Just been to the vets, they have no idea whats up other than "miscellaneous teeth issues" but gave her some metaclopramide and some stuff to syringe feed cos she's lost another 30g. and she needs to be built up in case she needs another anaesthetic soon :( my poor baby, all i want is for her to be happy and well, but she just seems to keep getting worse :(
