Confused about the jabs...

Hi all

I have been reading about poor Rory bun and his reaction to the VHD jab and its got me thinking....

Mia got spayed a week ago and is due for her jabs (along with the boys) this Saturday. Is this too soon?

If I recall, our buns last year may have got their Myxi and VHD jabs at the same time. I think I recall our vet saying that it wouldnt be a problem for rabbits that are in good health. Would it be better to wait three weeks before giving the second jab?

And third, and last, question... does it make a difference whether you do the Myxi or VHD jabs first?

Thanks all!

The order does not matter....myxi is usually first as it can be given at a younger age (6 weeks) than VHD (10 weeks) and most people get teir bunnies at 8 weeks.

There should be a minimum 2 weeks gap between the jabs but some vets are now recommending 4 weeks. A rabbit that is not in full health should not be vaccinated as their immune system will be put under enormous pressure and the vaccine may not be effective as well as possibly making them iller.

This is the same reason they should not be given together.....they are not licensed for this purpose.

My personal preference would be to give your girl another week before vaccinating as her body is busy healing from what is still pretty major surgery and vaccinating may leave her too weak to fight off infections.

Thanks for the detailed response Sooz - muchly appreciated!!

Its just been worrying about how things can go so wrong with the vaccinations - especially when you have the best interest of your bun at heart!

Hi,

I recently had my bunnie spayed two weeks yesterday, i took her back for her check up the following monday and she had her first ever myxi jab, she was fine. I then booked her in for two weeks time for her VHD jab but i have changed that to next thursday now.

I read the same story and it got me really worried, fingers crossed!!

xx
