  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Vet Visits - Speying and Vaccines

Hiya,

I took on an 8 month old Standard Rex Bunny on Monday. :D We're called her Darcy. She's quite feisty and territorial - hence needing a new home. When I go into her she grunts, stamps and attempts to box me. However, when I pick her up, she is absolutely fine - all the grumpyness stops and she sits/lies quietly. Earlier, I went to pick her up and I think I spooked her and she wee'd on me  ...lots!

I want to have her neutered for the health benefits (detering phantom pregnancies, cancer risks etc) and so she can maybe have a friend one day. I also hope that it may reduce her grumpy tendences - though she's not anywhere near as bad as I thought she'd be! :D

I'm just a bit concerned about a few things. Firstly, I'm really trying to gain her trust and confidence and I'm worried that the procedures (firstly vaccinations and then the neutering) at the vets will really upset her and her trust in people? :( Also, if I try to look at the op site to check it and she kicks out is she going to damage herself? How long is recovery time approximately?

Also, after reading the very helpful articles on here, its suggested that I locate a vet that specialises in bunnies. I have my other pets (dogs and chickens) registered at a local vet practice. If anyone has any particular suggestions, it'd be greatfully appreciated. I'm in Worcestershire.

I'm a real worrier I know, but I just want to do the best for her! Any answers/advice/personal experiences greatfully appreciated! :D

Many thanks!!

Whereabouts in Worcestershire are you?

I use The Pet Vaccination Clinic at Wythall for vaccinations and I know many local rescues use the same veterinary group for their neuters and spays. http://www.petvaccinationclinic.co.uk/

Not many bunnies actually like going to the vet ... but it has to be done! A nice tasty treat when she gets back and she'll soon forgive you

Thank you for that. :D I'll look into that. I currently go to Vale Vets Kidderminster, but have not taken a rabbit there before.

As you say, she'll just have to have lots of nice treats when she comes home to cheer her up. Green carrot tops seem to be her favorite so far!

A huge box has just arrived in the post for her containing all sorts of things: herb hay, sea grass matt, big bag of pellets, gnaw blocks etc. She's not going to be a spoilt bunny at all is she?!  Don't worry though, she'll not have them all at once! :D

 We use the PVC and have found them to be very good and reasonably priced too :D

Thats good to hear. I'll give them a call.

I just called my vet for a comparision and I think there charges are pretty in line with everyone elses: £15 each for the jabs and £65 for speying.

I'm thinking not, but would it be possible to have one of the jabs while she's being speyed? I'd have thought no, as she'll be jabbed with painkillers etc and wouldn't want the jabs to interfere with one another? Just thought I'd check! :D

Thanks again for your help

And no - you shouldn't vax a rabbit whilst being spayed - they need all their strength to recover. The vax's are £12.50 each at the PVC too ;)
