Hugo's There

Wise Old Thumper
Following on from all the stories I have recently heard about these I want to do something constructive to try to improve a not very well thought out system.

If anyone has had any experience of these adoptions, good or bad, please could you pm me to let me know about them.

Or if you have any constructive criticism please let me know.

I do not want this to turn into a hate thread as these rarely beneficial.

Thank you Liz x

In summer I found the two rabbits in the adoption section of Heeley P@H overheated and panting, trying to spread out to cool down but lacking the space to do so.

The store rabbits in their larger open top pens had fans to cool them but the poor adoption bunnies had nothing, I recall commenting to Phil on the time about the lack of equality between the stock and the rescues.

I know there were plans to alter to alter the cages but last time I went in they were the same.

I've managed to avoid the place since Christmas.

What were they planning to do? I was in there last weekend and the adoption section looked just the same :?

Off topic (sorry  ) but I've been thinking about contacting our local P@H to ask if the Sth Yorks Hoppers Group could host a rabbit care stall there one weekend - hopefully it'll be a way of getting the rabbit care message across to the masses. It's on my to-do list anyway :D

Are you in touch with someone at P@H about the adoption scheme, Liz? :)

Not yet, I want to get some info together first so I know what I'm talking about and have actual facts to present. I will then contact both the RWFA to see if they can help as they do have a relationship with P@H, and P@H itself

Cool :thumb: Sounds like a good plan and I think it's great that you're doing something proactive to address the situation :D I feel inspired to contact my local P@H about the stall now! :)

I don't go into P@H if I can help it (but sometimes you can't) and I try to avoid looking at any animals (because I always end up having a word). However, in their Northampton store the adoption section is right near the small animal stuff, so I have to look!

I think some of the problem lies in that the housing the pets are in makes them look so unattractive. It's dark and poorly lit, as well as being cramped. If the adoption pets were in a better looking 'display' they would probably rehome more.

Another problem I've noticed is that you sometimes see pets that have an obvious problem (eg. I saw a degu that could only be described as 'jolting') yet there is no mention of the problem on their information card (although it did say they were a pair and had to be housed together).

Also, I think they should homecheck where the pets are going, otherwise, what's the point?

I think if they really tried, they could perhaps make a great success of the scheme but they really need to change some aspects.

I've already collated reports from various P@H branches about the rabbits from adoption schemes and passed these on to the RWA who are in contact with P@H HQ.

I also don't agree with the no homecheck system... it could mean, to some people, getting a bunny for cheaper. I wasn't asked to prove details of my address - had I been a dishonest person it would have been easy to put a false address.

Maybe the adoption in P@H should be renamed? It just isn't offering the same service as a regular adoption centre - who only offer this service. xx

I got Charm from Heelys P@H adoption bit. *shudders* That poor bunny was almost dead when I got him. The biggest suggestion I have for the place is to actually look at the bloody animals and get them medical attention when they obviously need it before it gets so bad that... that the rabbits life is in danger because of it and the new owner has to go to the vets practically every week for the next couple of months.

That's my biggest complaint.

My second biggest is don't keep a 2ft rabbit in a 2 ft plastic cage!

Thank you for this, How is Charm now?

I adopted a bun from them just over a week ago, the adoption certificate said she was free from any physical deformity but whilst she was having her myxi vaccine the vet discovered her molars are overgrown. Her dental treatment is going to cost around £90 & the p@h charitable trust are refusing to help me pay for it even though she had the condition when i adopted her & was not informed (like i said, the adoption form states that she is in good health.) I am in the process of trying to get them to at least contribute to the vet fees but so far have been unsucessful :censored:

I have adopted a handful from work.

Guineas - Gizmo2 was donated by a customer. No health problems with him other than a bent claw and spurs on his feet, but hes a large pig so to be expected.

Choccy - Gave birth to Dazzle and Flash in store after she was returned by a customer after only 6 months. She was obviously pregnant when we took her back. Must have been a virgin pregnancy as the customer "aint got no males"

Dazzle and Flash - will be living with my other 3 sows in my shed.

Ratty Whiskey. She was a customer donation as she wouldnt bond with her other rats and gets very stressed and aggressive with other rats around.

Wiggles the bunny - Was found as a stray and donated by lady who managed to catch her. She was very aggressive and put a hole in my hand. Thinking it was a one off and she was scared we put her up for adoption and she was adopted by a gentleman who was well aware of what she did to my hand. 48 hours later she was back and he had a nice collection of stitches in his hand. Charity paid to have her spayed and I got to know her while she was recovering and fell in love with the real Wiggles, who is actually a bit of a softy!!

We got our pig Guiness from there, he looked so scared :( We were asked absolutely nothing when we got him, we weren't even asked if we had a cage/hutch.

We were there today (buns had VHD jabs at vets there) and there was an *unsocialised* 11 month old lionhead cross. She was there as her owners had no time for her  It said she was unneuteured and unvaccinated, although it said she would need to be neuteured *ASAP* - do not know how they would ensure this :?

hiii,

I got my rabbit Bo from the adoption centre in Huddersfield! (see siggy)
He had been there for soooooooo long i felt so sorry for him! he looked adorable lol so decided to take him home.

They didnt ask questions regarding a hutch, food, water, toys or anything.
Just said he was fiesty and had been neutered.
His breed was unknown along with his age.

He was a very nasty rabbit, notice the was! Hes getting there, its just taking time!

so....leaves alot to be desired!
xx
