Keep Forgetting to Tell You- Attn All Snuffle-Buns!!

Jack's-Jane

Wise Old Thumper
I have found a really useful addition to the treatment protocol of my Snufflers. Benadryl Paediatric Antihistimine Syrup.

*PLEASE CONSULT YOUR VET BEFORE GIVING IT TO YOUR SNUFFLE BUN *

It appears to soothe the irritated nasal membranes, be that inflammation due to infection or allergy. Benadryl is readily available OTC from Pharmacies

Dont forget ASK YOUR VET FIRST ;)

Hmmmm, I wonder if my rattling ratties might benefit from this. I have several ' human ' preperations that I use for them and I have a couple of really chronic snuffly, sneezy ratties at present.

Thnx Jane :D I will discuss with my vet as to whether this can be used in conjunction the other stuff I am using. I did a quick search and I think it will be ok, but will check first.

Will ask about this for BooBoo :D - she has been snuffly for over a month now and has had daily baytril injections since the start. :(

Thanks Jane

Hmm i have a guinea pig with a permanent rattle which Baytril just didnt touch. After investagitive surgery the vet said it *might* be a growth but couldnt be sure.
Someone mentioned using a human cough medicine on the guinea pig site once...

WellI'd give anything within reason a try for Lexie now.....what made you decide to try Benadryl Jane?

I get through a bottle in a couple of days when Im chesty and my Dad just swigs straight from the bottle

Errrrrmm you aren't getting it muddled with Benylin are you?

Benadryl is an antihistimine, Benylin is an Expectorant Cough Syrup

:?

I have a guinea pig just like that - it flares up every few weeks or so. I use Olbas oil on tissues up high on the bars of the cage, and Bisolvon powder from the vet.

Yep your right I am.....Is Benadryl what people with hayfever take? I have a vague recollection of Phil having some and I know nothing about human medicines unless they are also used for rabbits.

That clears up why I couldn't understand it soothing the nasal passages.

But still same questions apply.

From an article by Dana Krempels :

Alleviating the Symptoms of Runny Eyes and Runny Nose
Runny eyes that cannot be permanently repaired via tear duct flush may cause skin burns and irritation where the caustic tears collect on the skin. It is usually helpful to apply warm washcloth compresses to the affected areas daily, to help soften the dried tears, and then gently rub them away. A fine-toothed, small flea comb may be useful in helping remove softened crusts from the fur.
One excellent way to help a bunny with chronic runny eyes is to allow him/her to choose a spayed/neutered mate from among those at your local rabbit rescuer's foster home. Bonded bunnies spend a good deal of time grooming each other's faces, and we know of some bonded bunnies who once had very irritated skin from constant tearing who became completely symptom-free once they had mates to groom away those tears.

A very clogged nose is definitely a problem, as rabbits are obligate nasal breathers. You can help clear your bunny's nose temporarily by gently suctioning with a pediatric ear syringe.
Ask your vet about using a mild, pediatric antihistamine such as Benadryl to help shrink swollen nasal membranes. Together with a tear duct flush, which also helps flush the nasal passages, these treatments can be very effective at clearing the bunny's breathing route.

Whatever the cause of your bunny's problem, the sooner you allow your vet to perform the right tests and prescribe the proper treatment, the better your bunny will be able to breathe easily and be on the road to better health.

Ok - here's a really "spoon" question  Is this medication something to be taken orally or breathed in? Sorry - I know nothing about antihistimines but would really like to chat to my vet about it as Harry has had so many different medications for his snuffles and non of them have touched it.

We have a snuffly bun (been on baytril & septrin with only minimum relief) Please can you tell us doseage per rabbit & frequency medication should be given please Jane.
many thanx in advance

Hello,

I'm new to this forum but I've had experience of snuffly buns in the past. I go to a rabbit specialist vet and he's often given my buns Zithromax (azithromycin) for snuffles/pnuemonia type symptoms. Please note it is NOT licensed for use in rabbits - you use it at your own risk but I've never had any problems with it and it's always produced the desired results. The blurb that comes with the medicine says it's for .......lower respiratory tract infections including bronchitis and pneumonia.........upper respiratory tract infections including sinusitis......

If anyone's interested, I can give you the dosage for a 2-2.5kg bunny.

Yep, Zithromax is a useful antibiotic :)

I've just had a bunny finish a 3-4 week course of Zithromax and she still has snuffles, it doesn't appear to have worked, this is the first time I have tried it and I am rather disappointed

I cannot give you dose advice as I am not qualified to do so.
Please discuss the use of Benadryl with your Vet

Janex :)

Spoke to our vet this morning & regrettbly he is not sure of the doseage of Benedryl for our 2.5kg snuffly bun (but has agreed for it to be used)- can anyone please suggest where we can find out suggested doseage so we can start bun on it today (this vet is the best & most knowledgeable vet in this area for buns so not an option seeing another vet around here)

Thanking you in anticipation

My Vet advised starting off at a tiny dose of 0.1ml/kg
So my Vet would start your Bun off on a daily dose of 0.25ml Benadryl.
My Vet has said that if necessary I can use a dose of 0.2ml/kg if the lower dose is not enough.

Janex :)
