Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

whats wrong with my bunny?

New Kit
i was wondering if someone could possibly help me, my bunny, george, isn't too well.
He seems really dopey, all his fur is falling out, and his fur is covered in white flakes, like the worse case of dandruff i've ever seen. He seems to be scratching alot and doesn't like me touching him
He also has a runny eye, i think this is unrelated and doesn't seem to bother him much.
I have a piggy that lives with him :D and he is totally fine which makes me think it might not be mites.
Usually i'd be the first one one the phone to the vets, but my parents are away till the weekend, and its nearly an hours journey on the bus, which i'd rather not put him through.
i was just wondering if anyone knows what might be wrong with him, and whether you think he'll be ok for another week till i can get him to the vets? Any sugesstions will be greatly received.
thankyou

It sounds like he might have mites.
As he's scratching a lot and is "dopey" I wouldn't delay taking him to the vets really - I think the sooner you can start treatment the better.
I always use the analagy that if you or a member of your family was suffering from this condition, would you make them wait or would you get it sorted?
Rabbits are such fragile little souls, and if he stops eating 'cos he's feeling like poop you'll have an emergency on your hands which'll cost you 20 times what the mite treatment will.
Have you got a nice aunt/uncle or cousin who could give you a lift?

Others might give an idea on what might be wrong with your rabbit - but in my opinion, he definately needs to see a vet asap. He doesnt sound at all comfortable.

Is he eating and pooing?

Cara

i went in earlier an he was chomping on a carrot, and he pooped on me so no issues there. When i let him and my piggy on to the garden earlier (fenced off of course) he didn't want to come out, and just sat in his hutch where as ziggy came bounding out squeeking at me. he just doesn't seem himself, if theres no change in the morning i might have to see if i can book a taxi or something.

Sounds to me like cheyletiella, otherwise known as "walking dandruff"
Get your bunny to the vets, it'll more than likely need a 3 week course of injections to sort out the problem...

yup sounds like could be mites and as your guinea pig is a different species that is probebly why its not affected (like you dont get the rabbit mites...) also on a seperate note did you know that people dont advise keeping the two types together these days? due to a gut bacteria, different food needs and also some buns have accidently hurt their bunny friends. i would pop to a vet mayb an older relative or freind could take you?or a taxi?and mayb speak to parents about nuetering and getting bun a freind of own and guinea pig a freind of own. obvioiusly health needs come first.

thanks for the advice i'm trying to find a lift.
And thanks for the advice about the piggy and the rabbit together, they've been together over 3 years now and so far no probs, they get on really well, inseperable almost, but i do keep and eye on them and i wouldn't hesitate to split them up and find them new friends if i thought any problems were
occuring. :)
I appriciate the help and let you know how it goes

Hi Holly

Just to add that the symptoms your Bun has ( itchy mites, runny eyes) all point to Dental problems so I'd make sure yor Vet checks your Buns teeth.
Buns with Dental prblems often cant groom themself and this can lead to mites. They can also get runny eyes if they have tooth roots that have grown to long and are pressing on the 'tear ducts' of the eyes.

Janex :)
