  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Lucky soemtimes passes urine that is thick & white. What causes it? Does it mean her kidneys arent working properly? Shes doesnt seem unwell & is her usual loving, manic little sweetie.

She is excreting a lot of calcium :) Does the wee feel 'gritty' if you run a finger through it? If so it may be a good idea to moderate the Bun's dietary calcium.

It's usually caused by an excess of calcium in the diet. Things like parsley, alfalfa and kale, that are quite high in calcium are usually the culprits. If you reduce feeding these, it should right itself quite quickly, providing your rabbit doesn't seem to be in pain and is eating/drinkin/weeing, there is no real problem.

thanks Jane those articles were very interesting & Friskyclover. Im stillnot sure why Lucky is afflicted. I think it may be hereditary because none of my other buns have a problem. My buns until revently were fed SS & are now on A&P but only really eat meadow hay, herbage, spring greens (a leaf every night) the odd carrot, 1 or 2 sprouts a few times a week a bit of mint They do get parsely but again its only on the odd occasion.

I would just try and encourage her to drink more by warming the water with a splash of boiling from the kettle, and serving it in a bowl rather than a bottle - also wet the veg so it's dripping when she eats it :)

Lucky drinks loads of water somewhere between 100-150ml a day but will try leaving her veg wet; though Im sure I read somewhere to make sure the veg is always dried after washing before giving to a bun

I read that to which is why we always pat the veg dry!

how bizarre - did they say why it needed to be dried? Does she have water in a dish or bottle? She might need to drink more but can't be bothered from a bottle - they are like that :)

PS - forgot to ask - what's in the herbage? Dandelions are extremely high in calcium, especially when all the water's been removed from them.
