Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Lionhead with sore eye

Clare

New Kit
My little fella Elvis is a 6mthold Lionhead, i only got him a week and his little eye looks sore and the rims look red, i have given him eye cream should i bathe it too? also how long does it usually take to clear up and should i apply it to both eyees even though its just one that is sore?
Thanks

Have you checked his eye for a stray hair or bit of hay/grass? Is there any discharge? Has he had the same before and was then prescribed the eye ointment? My Simba and Fifi have both had eye infections at some point.. Fifi's was caused from a tiny piece of hay getting into her eye and then getting stuck in her tearduct. Simba's we didnt find a cause but both of them had really gooey eyes.. Fifi's was really closed but simba's was open. Both went to the vets and had their tear ducts flushed then had fucithalmic eye ointment twice a day for about a week. I also used cooled boiled water and cotton wool pad to cleanse their eye before i put the ointment in, especially when it was all gooey and sticky. When the vet prescribed the fucithalmic ointment he said if the same occurs i could just repeat the same treatment.

If his eye is just red round the edges but not gooey or sticky at all id get him checked out at the vets in case its anything else... I thought the eye ointment was just for infections, a sign of which would be a discharge :?

Just keep on checking on it, and if it gets worse go to a vet. Make sure to look for discharge, and try adn clean it up, to avoid the eye becomming irritated. Also, check his teeth as often eye problems are connected with teeth.

Hi clare,if it worsens you might have to have him vet checked but one of mine has had a bad eye a couple of times once it went on its own the other needed vet treatment.

Thanks for all your replys, His eye is loads better now, i will carry on with the eye drops for a couple of days, to make sure :D
