Summer and Fly Strike

Young Bun
Hey all

I was wondering what everyone was doing with their rabbits for summer? Mine are currently inside their hutch in the garage which has been great for winter but it can get really hot in there in the summer, I was thinking of moving them outside but then Im worried about fly strike, does anyone have any advice on what I should do, also good ways of preventing fly strike?

Also would letting them out all day in the run all day and then back in the garage on the night be ok even though it will be warm?

Cheers

I'm going to put fly nets up over their hutch and run to help stop insects getting to the rabbits. I'm also going to check that the rabbits' bottoms are clean every day so that they don't attract any flies. Some people use a product called Rearguard that helps prevent flystrike but some people don't like using it because of the chemicals.

I think that if the garage gets hot in summer, even at night, I would not put the rabbits in there. It's hot enough in summer, let along be in a garage that gets hot as well.

I also don't know that much about flystrike, and am interested to see a lot of the replies you get.

Is flystrike such a problem for indoor bunnies too during the summer? or is it less of a threat?

Flystrike is a risk to all rabbits. There is lots of information available including:

Keeping your rabbit slim and also with a clean bottom are the main things which will help keep them at a lesser risk of flystrike.
