Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Elderly Dutch/nethie X with weepy eyes

parsnipbun

Wise Old Thumper
My lovely Sweet Pea, who is a sort of large nethie or small Dutch (!), has had a weepy eye due to congested tear duct on and off for about 9 months now. We have had it flushed a few months ago and then again about a month ago, and also been on ABX for short bursts and also various eye ointments. It seems to clear up quite qickly and look all sprkly and clean again, but then the weep comes back again about a month later.
He has had teeth looked at (but not x-rayed) by our rabbit savy vet who thinks maybe its a mix of teeth root plus degenerating tear duct problem . But now the other eye is weeping a bit.

Anyone else have this problem??
Is it 'just' an age thing?
Do you think I should just carry on treating as it occurs or try for more investigations?? Have a feeling it was cultured when it first happened to make sure we had the right eye ointment.
I don't like to have him go under GA for an x-ray as he is 9, but it seems such a shame it keeps coming back.

Advice and thoughts welcome

I would guess you're correct about it being a teeth issue.

He might need to be on antibiotics/eye drops permanently.

Just a thought, but could your vet try to x-ray him conscious? My vets usually do this if possible.

I had a guinea pig with a weeping eye problem, it went on for months following an eye injury prior to him being rescued. It was eventually solved with steroid eye drops, which may be worth trying if you haven't already.

I would agree that it is probably more likely to be the result of teeth problems in a rabbit. I've always found Optrex eyewash (or Boots version) really good for small furry eye problems, it really soothes them.

Friskycover:

Is the eyewash (Optrex) ok for rabbits? It would be nice to give him something to soothe them if it is going to be a long term problem.

hi
i have this problem often with the 29 buns. i use chlorampheincol drops twice aday and weekly tear duct flushing. and the vet will use the drops as a last flush so it goes right through. uslly clears up.
hope that helps
