  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Help! Fitting?

Hiya

I've just put Joe to bed following his playtime, and he started to kick when I picked him up (which he usually does) and as he jumped off me into his hutch he started sneezing, about 20-25 in a row. While he was sneezing he was rubbing the side of his face with his front paws, really frantically.

Then he just stopped and started chewing the carrot I put in for him.

Do you think he hurt himself, or maybe caught his lip when he was kicking? Maybe he was fitting? or just had something up his nose?

Luckily I haven't seen a rabbit in pain so I don't know how they deal with it - so I may have asked a really stupid question and he just had a sneeze

It sounds as though he had something up his nose :)
Do check that there is no whitish nasal discharge or that the insides of his front paws are not sticky (from wiping his nose) Just keep an eye on him for any more sneezing ( which *might* indicate the onset of a Respiratory tract infection ) but it sounds like the episode you descibe was a one off

Janex :)

My Jessica had a sneezing fit once after she ran and hid in a bale of straw! If you check for discharge etc and there isn't anything I would think it was a one off. Keep an eye and if the sneezing fits occur more fequently pop along to the vets :)
